    1. Author Jonathan Biss has written two kindle singles – the first about Beethoven and this, about his relationship with the music of Robert Schumann. Biss recalls that he first remembers playing his music at the age of nine, in a home where he grew up surrounded by music, in a family of musicians. Yet, although he states that he felt awe for so many other composers, for Schumann he felt love; musing that “he knows the meaning of solitude, and he can translate it into sound.” This is a very p [...]

    2. I've not had the chance to hear Mr. Biss play piano but he sure can write passionately about music. There's a great passage in this book about how performers can be influenced by hearing others play and interpret pieces that reminded me of parts of the book "Free Play" and evoked for me the repeat readigpngs of children's books that parents must perform. Particularly I thought of how I interpret certain Dr. Seuss books and how hearing others read them influences my own reading. It's fascinating [...]

Jonathan writes so well that we can only hope that he will continue to add writing to his very busy performance career. For those reading this book because of a shared interest in the music of Robert Schumann, Biss’ t [...]

He details what it is like for him to play music that hits so close to home on a personal level. He also notes Schumann's ststus as an almost second-rate composer - a view which he does not share. What does come across is Biss' obvious love for music in general, classical music in particular and especially that of Robert Schumann [...]
